Diversity Programs and the Office for Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs

The staff of the office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs understands that diversity is essential to cultivating a rich and innovative learning community and society as a whole.  And to that end, we work to ensure that new and continuing graduate and professional students, as well as postdoctoral scholars, feel confident and excited to contribute to the social and scholarly environment here at the University of Virginia. Through Diversity Programs, here are some ongoing initiatives and/or services upon which our office focuses:

  • Serving as a diversity resource for prospective and current graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and staff
  • Attending graduate fairs, conferences, and symposia
  • Advising and recommending programs and policies to assist campus units in recruiting applicants from diverse populations
  • Continuously pursuing new and effective ways of improving graduate and postdoctoral diversity
  • Creating and growing sustainable partnerships between the University and minority-serving institutions
  • Creating mentoring and professional development opportunities for underrepresented students and postdoctoral scholars
  • Supporting faculty and staff in creating diverse and interdisciplinary partnerships with graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds
