The mission of the Office of Diversity Programs is to cultivate a rich and innovative learning community, where all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows can thrive at the University of Virginia. We believe that the myriad of perspectives, attributes, and life experiences is essential to the success of the University of Virginia.  Therefore, we work to ensure that graduate and postdoctoral scholars, contribute to the social and academic environment at UVA.

The Office of Diversity Programs is a subsidiary of the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (OGPA), and actively provides the following services to support the academic success and development of our students:

  • Graduate Recruitment: We aim to diversify and grow our graduate student body and postdoctoral scholars. Therefore, we cultivate strategic partnerships with Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and participate in national conferences to promote graduate studies at the University of Virginia.  In addition, we offer application fee waivers to promote equity, access, and inclusion for all in graduate education.
  • Academic and Personal Development: We provide academic support to students for enrichment purposes through connections with tutoring, university resources, and aid.  In addition, we offer confidential advisement sessions to prospective and current graduate students about varied topics such as graduate school preparation, budgeting, cultivating healthy relationships with advisors, and career exploration. Furthermore, we also have a strong partnership with the University’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) center.
  • Mentorship: We host the Mentoring Institute, a flagship initiative that promotes academic excellence to members from underrepresented and underserved communities. Participants receive advocates to facilitate a positive transition into graduate studies and life in Charlottesville.
  • Community Engagement:   We sponsor programs and events with graduate student organizations aimed to promote community, a sense of belonging, and cultivate solutions within the UVA graduate student body.
  • Outreach:  We serve as a resource hub for information to connect prospective students, current graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and staff to advancement opportunities.
